Since 2004, the research group led by Professor Zhu Ping of Wuhan Textile University has screened a large number of alginic acid raw materials suitable for spinning, developed functional alginate fibers with good performance, and independently designed R&D to manufacture the first domestic application for seaweeds. The wet production line for large-scale production of fiber has an annual spinning capacity of 500 tons.

Continuous development of high value-added, green, non-polluting new fibers capable of large-scale production is the dream of textile experts, and alginate fiber is preferred because of its good performance. However, for a long time, due to its low strength and poor alkali resistance, the industrial production of alginate fiber has always been a problem for experts. The two British and American monopoly companies that hold this technology have an annual output of less than 100 tons of alginic acid, and the output value is as high as 5.5 billion US dollars. Alginate fiber can be widely used in medical dressings, facial mask bases, breast disease women underwear and the like.

The technology invented by Professor Zhu Ping uses seaweed derived from marine pure natural materials. Pure water is used as a solvent, and the production process and product use will not cause environmental pollution. Compared with ordinary fiber materials, its hygroscopicity, flame retardant and antibacterial advantages are obvious.

The research group also found that alginate fibers have metal ion adsorption, dyeing and other characteristics. With the discovery of more characteristics of alginate fiber, more new products can be developed.

Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Jiang Shicheng, Sun Jinliang, Zhou Xiang, Yao Mu and other experts suggested that the field of application of alginate fiber should be explored as soon as possible to meet market demand.
