Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

Residents of the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District are set to see a noticeable drop in their property tax bills, following the approval of a record-breaking $1.2 million tax abatement—by far the largest in the district's history and among the most significant local abatements in recent years.

The decision was made by the district board last week, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing growing concerns about rising property taxes. While it’s still too early to determine the exact impact on individual households, a similar abatement of $300,000 in the previous year led to an average tax reduction of about $75 per household.

The district serves unincorporated areas between Waukegan and Gurnee, extending westward to Grayslake. It covers approximately 3,300 homes and structures, with Park City also included in its coverage, even though it is an incorporated city.

Thanks to smart financial planning and collaboration with Gurnee, the district has managed to turn its finances around. Just 15 years ago, it was operating with an annual deficit of about $800,000. Today, it maintains substantial cash reserves that make such a large abatement possible.

By expanding the Gurnee Fire Department’s service area, the district has also enabled the department to access additional grants and funding opportunities that would have otherwise been out of reach.

Over the years, the district has invested heavily in emergency services, purchasing multiple ambulances, fire engines, and even contributing half the cost of Gurnee’s newest ladder truck. Additionally, more than a decade ago, the district passed a resolution ensuring that no resident would face out-of-pocket costs for ambulance services.
