**Site Bite: Vertically Mounted Coils with a Horizontal Airflow**
Join us on-site with Jack Kessler, our very own intern at Nationwide Coils, as he takes us through a fascinating and unconventional coil setup at a middle school in New York City.
This particular project involved a custom steam coil system that was installed vertically, with airflow moving horizontally. This unique configuration wasn’t just for style—it was essential to manage condensate buildup effectively.
Steam coils are designed to heat air by transferring heat from the steam inside the tubes. But once the steam cools and turns back into liquid, it needs to exit the coil. If it doesn’t, the water can freeze, expand, and cause serious damage—like ruptured coils. That’s why proper drainage is so important.
In this case, the solution was to pitch the return header downward. This allows gravity to assist in draining the condensate naturally, especially when the system isn’t running at full pressure. It's a smart design that ensures long-term reliability.
Here's a look at the setup. The return connections are located at the bottom of the unit. You can see two coils placed side by side, each angled slightly downward to help with condensate flow. The casing wraps around them, giving the unit a compact and efficient appearance.
On the top, you’ll find the supply connections, which bring the steam into the system. When the system is operating at full load, the pressure can push the condensate out on its own. But during partial loads or lower pressures, the pitched header becomes critical.
