It turns out that Clarendon Hills officials made a smart decision when they chose to keep their old ambulance as a backup after purchasing a brand-new $259,000 model in December 2014. The new 2015 Freightliner/Horton ambulance, delivered on December 11, has been out of service since February 23 due to cracks inside the cabin, according to Fire Chief Brian Leahy. It’s expected to be unavailable for repairs until late March.
“There was some serious cracking, and we returned it to the dealer,†Leahy explained. “They sent it back to the manufacturer, Horton Ambulance, in Ohio.â€
The dealer, Foster Coach Sales, Inc., is based in Sterling, Illinois, and specializes exclusively in ambulances. The unit will be disassembled and reassembled on March 9, as Leahy revealed. “It started with one crack, and then five more appeared within a week. The entire interior needs to be taken apart and put back together.â€
While Leahy is disappointed that the new ambulance is already out of commission just months after its arrival, he remains confident that the issue will be resolved. “It’s a glitch, not a lemon,†he said. “The problem is cosmetic, but it definitely needs to be fixed.â€
Meanwhile, the department is using its 2008 ambulance again. Originally, they planned to sell or trade it in, which led to two verbal offers of $30,000 each. However, internal discussions prompted the idea of keeping the older ambulance as a backup for times when the new one is undergoing maintenance, experiencing mechanical issues, or involved in an accident.
Traditionally, the fire department has operated with only one ambulance. While a ladder truck is equipped with some medical equipment, it cannot transport patients to the hospital. Leahy noted that the department could manage without a backup during this period, but Foster Coach Sales has offered to provide a loaner if needed.
