**Site Bite: Vertically Mounted Coils with a Horizontal Airflow**

At John S. Roberts J.H.S., we encountered a custom steam coil system that was mounted vertically, but with a horizontal airflow pattern. This unusual configuration wasn’t just for style—it was necessary to manage condensate buildup effectively.
Once the steam condenses into liquid, it needs to exit the coil. If it doesn’t, the liquid can freeze and expand, which can lead to coil rupture. That’s why this design was crucial—especially in a system that might not always run at full pressure.
To ensure proper drainage, the return header was pitched downward. This allowed gravity to assist in removing condensate from the system. The condensate connections are positioned at the bottom of the unit, and the two coils are arranged side by side, each sloping slightly downward.
Here’s a closer look at the setup:

Even when the system is operating at half load or lower pressure, the pitched header ensures that condensate drains properly. It’s a smart and practical solution that keeps the system running smoothly without unnecessary stress on the components.
