Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
Residents of the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District are in for a financial relief as the district recently approved a record-breaking $1.2 million tax abatement, marking the largest in its history and one of the most significant local tax reductions in recent years.
The decision was made by the district board last week, showcasing their commitment to easing the burden of property taxes on residents. While it’s still too early to determine the exact amount of savings each household will see, a similar abatement of $300,000 last year led to an average reduction of about $75 per family.
The district serves unincorporated areas between Waukegan and Gurnee, stretching westward to Grayslake. It covers approximately 3,300 homes and structures, with Park City also included despite being an incorporated area.
This partnership has been key to turning the district around financially. Just 15 years ago, the district was running an annual deficit of about $800,000. Through smart budgeting and collaboration with Gurnee, it now has substantial cash reserves that make such a large abatement possible.
By expanding Gurnee’s service area, the fire department can now access grants and funding opportunities it previously wasn’t eligible for. This not only strengthens the department’s capabilities but also benefits the entire district.
The district has invested heavily in emergency response, purchasing multiple ambulances, fire engines, and even contributing half the cost of Gurnee’s newest ladder truck. Additionally, over a decade ago, the district passed a resolution ensuring no resident would face out-of-pocket costs for ambulance services.
