This is a report from Eric Haak:
A working fire was dispatched to 6514 S. Ellis Avenue just before 0500 hours on Sunday, May 22nd. Engine 63 arrived first and confirmed the presence of a fire. Shortly after, Engine 60 took the alley and used their deck gun to knock down most of the fire on the back porches, which were fully involved. The 5th Battalion reported that it was a three-story, 75x100 apartment building and requested a still and box for support. During the incident, one family became trapped on the third floor and had to be rescued using ground ladders. Moments later, 4-5-8 called for an EMS Plan I. Although the fire spread to the rear of several apartments, it was brought under control fairly quickly.
As I was focused on assisting with the rescue efforts, I didn’t get many images from the rear of the building. I’m not sure if anyone was actually transported from the scene, but all members of the family appeared to be in good condition. It also seemed like there were working smoke detectors in the building, though it’s unclear if they were the ones that alerted the family to the fire.
