CFD LODD anniversary – Firefighter Ed Coglianese

Excerpts from DNAinfo.com:

On the same day the Chicago Bears claimed victory in Super Bowl XX, the city of Chicago mourned the loss of Chicago Fire Lt. Edmond Coglianese. The 42-year-old firefighter from Mount Greenwood died while battling a fire at the Mark Twain Hotel on January 26, 1986.

Coglianese, a 12-year veteran, was instrumental in rescuing two elderly residents trapped on the third floor of the residential hotel at 111 W. Division St. According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, he returned into the five-story building to search for more survivors. Tragically, he became trapped by the flames and later succumbed to smoke inhalation that day.

In total, 35 senior citizens were rescued using ladders, while another 100 people escaped through the stairways, as reported by the fire department.

A solemn bell-ringing ceremony took place at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Engine Company 98, where Coglianese had served. He left behind his wife, Eileen, and their two children, Allyson and Matt. Eileen is now the president of the Gold Badge Society, an organization dedicated to supporting families who have lost firefighters or paramedics in the line of duty.

The Gold Badge Society offers emotional support and practical assistance during these difficult times. Members visit hospitals and homes to provide comfort and help with funeral arrangements, media inquiries, and other necessary tasks following such a tragedy. Their shared experiences offer a unique form of solace to those who are grieving.

Thanks, Dan.
