Supported by the Chinese and German governments, Shanghai Jiaotong University serves as the primary institution for this technical cooperation project titled "Research on High Power Laser Welding Technology for Ships." This initiative marks a significant milestone as it is the first welding technology research and application project developed by China's shipbuilding industry. The project is progressing well, with the second group of participants already en route to Germany for training.
From 2004 to 2007, the project focused on integrating the latest high-power laser welding technologies into shipbuilding. It received strong backing from the German government and six leading research institutions and companies in Germany. As part of the agreement, Germany will provide advanced equipment and training to China, while also engaging in continuous technical exchanges and collaborations. Meanwhile, Chinese researchers and engineers are expected to leverage their expertise to drive innovation in welding technology.
Through this project, the goal is to cultivate a team of skilled professionals, develop new technologies, and produce tangible results that bring China’s welding capabilities up to par with global standards. The ultimate aim is to ensure that China remains at the forefront of technological development in this field.
Laser welding has gained attention due to its high energy density, precise control, strong penetration, and minimal heat input, resulting in less deformation and greater weld quality. It also allows for flexibility through the use of different shielding gases. These advantages make it a promising technique for modern manufacturing. However, due to the small spot size after laser focusing, the precision of the workpiece assembly is critical, which makes it challenging to implement in large-scale industries like shipbuilding.
Currently, only a few countries, such as Germany and the United States, have successfully applied laser welding in ship construction, with Germany being a global leader in this area. This project represents a crucial step forward for China in adopting and mastering this cutting-edge technology, positioning itself as a key player in the international shipbuilding industry.
