Oil refining equipment industry opportunities and challenges coexist

At the 2006 China Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Industry Development Forum, Zhu Yu, former president of the China National Petroleum and Chemical Research Institute of Economics and Technology, highlighted that the Chinese refining equipment industry is currently experiencing both significant opportunities and major challenges. One key opportunity lies in the large-scale expansion of oil refining capacity. It is expected that at least 10 million tons of new refining capacity will come online each year for the next five years. With more than 20 refineries reaching capacities of over 20 million tons, this growth will drive demand for large-scale refining equipment. Additionally, as light oil yields increase, the depth of processing will also rise, leading to a surge in demand for secondary processing technologies such as catalytic cracking, reforming, and delayed coking. Another important factor is the need to meet the national III standards for oil quality, which will significantly boost the demand for hydrogenation equipment. By 2010, it's estimated that hydrogenation capacity will grow by 35 to 40 million tons per year, increasing the need for various types of hydrogenation reactors. Moreover, rising reliance on foreign crude oil and the need to expand refining and storage capabilities will also drive infrastructure development. The capacity of crude oil docks must be increased by 150 million tons per year, while storage tank capacity needs to expand by over 100 million cubic meters to meet growing demand. However, the refining equipment sector also faces three major challenges. First, there is a need for more efficient equipment to support energy-efficient refining processes. Current energy consumption stands at around 75 kg of standard oil per ton of crude, but improvements could bring this down to 70 kg. This requires advanced technologies, including new mass transfer systems, high-efficiency heat exchangers, and improved reactor internals. Second, the industry must develop large-scale, high-precision, and long-lasting equipment, such as high-parameter centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, to support the integration of refining and chemical production. Finally, enhancing equipment reliability, fault diagnosis technology, and pressure vessel safety assessment methods is crucial to ensure long-term and safe operations. These developments reflect a dynamic industry that is evolving rapidly to meet the demands of a growing market while addressing technical and environmental challenges.
