It’s that time of year again… According to Larry Shapiro, the RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning about brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, emergency crews were also responding to additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove were also seen battling blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22.
In response to the growing situation, the railroad temporarily halted all train traffic through the area. A train that had just passed through the region was stopped for a thorough inspection to ensure safety.
All of the fires were brought under control within approximately 90 minutes. Here are some striking images captured by Larry Shapiro from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road.
