Plants of Tomorrow Drone Days: Advancing Innovation in Holcim Cement Plant Inspections with Elios

The long-standing collaboration between Holcim and Flyability has reached a significant milestone with the successful launch of the first edition of the European Drone Days. Held at Flyability’s headquarters in Lausanne from June 20th to 22nd, 2023, the event brought together drone pilots and plant representatives from 15 out of the 16 European countries where Holcim operates. This marked a major step forward in strengthening their partnership and exploring new opportunities for drone technology in the cement industry.

Launching the First Successful European Plants of Tomorrow Drone Days

The European PoT Drone Days, organized by Flyability in collaboration with Holcim, was a three-day event focused on deepening understanding of Flyability’s drone technology and uncovering new applications within the cement sector. By fostering stronger connections among Holcim’s drone community and enhancing cooperation with Flyability, both parties achieved remarkable results. Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability, opened the event by welcoming the 25 Holcim pilots and plant representatives present, urging them to continue working closely with Flyability beyond just product development. By the end of the event, it was clear that drone technology had been seamlessly integrated into Holcim’s operations, highlighting its numerous benefits for the industry.

A Partnership Fueled by Innovation

Flyability's collaboration with Holcim exemplifies a strong, mutually beneficial partnership aimed at driving innovation in the cement industry. As a key technology partner, Flyability has developed the most advanced indoor inspection drones tailored for the challenging environments found in cement plants. These drones are uniquely equipped to navigate dusty and hazardous conditions, making them the only solution capable of performing high-quality inspections in such settings. Since the initial tests at the Holcim Eclepens plant in 2016, the company has expanded its drone fleet to 37 units and now has over 100 trained Elios drone pilots. Roze Wesby, Global Head of Plants of Tomorrow at Holcim, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “With the Plants of Tomorrow initiative, we're using these drones to improve health and safety by eliminating the need to send people into confined spaces. This not only protects our workers but also boosts profitability by reducing costs like scaffolding and minimizing downtime.”
