Mitsubishi Electric announced on February 15, 2016 that it has developed a "multi-carrier optical transceiver technology" that enables transmission speeds of 1Tbit / sec using existing optical networks. Approximately 27 DVDs per second can be transmitted, reducing the cost of ownership by eliminating the need for a new fiber optic network.

The technology uses an optical frequency comb that accurately and simultaneously generates multiple light waves at a certain fine frequency interval, and sends 11 light waves (subcarriers) together. The transmission speed between the transceivers can be increased by about 10 times. 11 kinds of subcarriers can be densely integrated into one beam so that it can communicate with only one group of transceivers.

On the transmitter side, pilot signals are periodically inserted into each subcarrier (signal patterns specified between the transceivers), and the timing of receiving all subcarriers is uniformly corrected on the receiver side, thereby preventing data from being damaged.

In the verification experiment, the UCL optical network research group that cooperated with Aston University in UK to promote the large-capacity optical communication project "UNLOC" successfully realized the data transmission speed of 1Tbit / sec. In addition, the frequency utilization efficiency was confirmed as 9.2 bit / s / Hz.
