On May 24th, under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association led the national major technical equipment project for truck-mounted radial tire production and engineering radial tire development. The acceptance committee praised the project’s success, stating that it has enabled China to develop full sets of equipment for radial tire manufacturers and supply critical machinery to engineering tire producers. This achievement is expected to significantly support the growth and technological advancement of China's tire industry.
Du Ronglin, director of the Technical Equipment Office at the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, highlighted that the project involved 35 prototypes, including large-scale rubber mixing systems, extrusion-calendering machines, molding and vulcanizing units, as well as testing equipment. These were developed by 16 companies and research institutions. The technical performance of the equipment reached international standards, with innovative, advanced, and reliable features. A total of 69 national patents were obtained, including 17 invention patents, showcasing China’s growing technological capabilities in this field.
The implementation of the project has notably reduced investment costs for Chinese tire projects and increased the use of domestic equipment. For instance, a 300,000-unit radial tire project once required an investment of 700 to 800 million yuan, with imported equipment costing between 10 to 40 million U.S. dollars. Now, only 200 to 300 million yuan and minimal foreign exchange are needed. By the end of 2005, 662 sets of equipment had been deployed across dozens of tire companies globally, generating 1.764 billion yuan in revenue and 320 million yuan in profits and taxes. The return on investment was as high as 1:20. Additionally, 49 exported units brought in 14.36 million U.S. dollars in foreign exchange, saving 2.7 billion yuan for tire companies and 550 million U.S. dollars for the country.
The acceptance committee commended the project’s successful execution, especially the close collaboration between manufacturers and users during its implementation. This cooperation model is seen as highly valuable and worth promoting. The project has helped China’s rubber machinery industry establish a series of independent, technologically advanced design and manufacturing capabilities, boosting innovation and competitiveness. As a result, the rubber and tire industries have experienced significant development. Currently, three Chinese companies rank among the top ten global rubber machinery firms, while ten others are in the top 30, reflecting a substantial improvement in China’s international standing in this sector.
