2-Alarm fire in Sycamore, 12-16-16

A fire broke out at the three-story Victorian "Boynton Mansion," built in 1886. A van in the carport was fully involved, and firefighters arrived to find heavy flames spreading into the kitchen and up through the first and second floors. They quickly escalated the response to a 2-11. The incident was well managed, and the fire was eventually brought under control.

Norm Mathisen noticed an odd smell while working on carpentry at the historic Charles O. Boynton House, located at 307 N. Main St. He then looked outside and saw his van engulfed in flames.

The fire quickly spread from the carport to all three floors of the iconic Sycamore home. Firefighters from over a dozen local departments spent around three hours bringing the blaze under control.

Mathisen, owner of Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring based in DeKalb, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned from lunch at about 12:30 p.m. He claimed the fire was still contained to the van when he called 911.

Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner mentioned that the 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m., reporting a burning van in the carport. By the time they controlled the fire in the carport, it had already spread throughout the house. Firefighters had to remove walls and windows to ensure the fire was completely out.

The mansion, a large Queen Anne-style red brick home covering 8,000 square feet, was designed by George O. Garnsey, who also built a similar property in DeKalb. The house remained in the Boynton family for over 100 years. Built between 1886 and 1887, it cost $12,000—equivalent to about $320,000 today—and has been a popular stop on local house tours.

Fighters from DeKalb, Maple Park, Elburn, Kirkland, Hinckley, Sugar Grove, Burlington, Genoa-Kingston, and Cortland all helped put out the fire.

Pressure vessel steel plate covers a range of steel grades that are designed for use in pressure vessel, boilers, heat exchanges and any other vessel that contains a gas or liquid at high pressures.

Familiar examples include gas cylinders for cooking and for welding, oxygen cylinders for diving and many of the large metallic tanks that you see in an oil refinery or chemical plant.

There is a huge range of different chemicals and liquid that that stored and processed under pressure. These range from relatively benign substances such as milk and palm oil to crude oil and natural gas and their distillates to highly lethal acids and chemicals such as methyl isocyanate. So of these processes need the gas or liquid to be very hot, whilst others contain it at very low temperatures. As a result there is a wide variety of different pressure vessel steel grades that meet the different use cases.

In general these can be divided into three groups. There is a group of carbon steel pressure vessel grades. These are standard steels and can cope with many applications where there is low corrosion and low heat. As heat and corrosion have more effect on the steel plates chromium, molybdenum and nickel are added to provide additional resistance.

The manufacture of pressure vessels is tightly regulated as a result of the risks involved and as a consequence the materials that can be used in vessels is also tightly specified. The most common specifications for pressure vessel steels are the EN10028 standards – which are European in origin – and the the ASME/ASTM standards which are from the US.

Our strength is in the very high specification pressure vessel steel plate used in the oil and gas industry and specifically in steel plate resistant to Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC).
