According to recent updates from the Department of Commerce in Hunan Province, US-based companies SLG Carbon and Superior Graphite have submitted a formal petition to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission (ITC) seeking an anti-dumping investigation into graphite electrodes imported from China. The case involves 31 Chinese companies and is valued at approximately $35 million. This development has raised concerns among local manufacturers who are now preparing for a potential trade challenge.
The products under scrutiny are small-diameter graphite electrodes with a diameter of 400 mm or less. All Chinese companies that exported these items to the United States during the investigation period are included in the probe. Among them is Tongxiang Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. based in Hunan, which exported goods worth $1.4 million to the U.S. in 2006 and has since been identified as one of the involved parties.
Under U.S. anti-dumping procedures, affected companies must respond promptly to detailed questionnaires issued by the Department of Commerce and the ITC. Failure to provide timely and accurate responses could result in the loss of access to the U.S. market, leading to significant financial losses. Following the initial filing, the U.S. Department of Commerce will assess whether the case meets the legal requirements for proceeding. A decision is expected to be announced within three weeks.
In response to this situation, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Mechanical and Electrical Products is set to convene soon to discuss strategies and support for affected businesses. This move highlights the growing importance of international trade compliance and the need for proactive measures to protect domestic industries from foreign trade barriers. As the situation unfolds, Chinese exporters are advised to stay informed and prepare accordingly.
