In 2007, the Wuhan Development Zone in Zhuyangkou, Hanyang, set an ambitious target: to produce and sell one million vehicles annually within three years, with an output value exceeding 100 billion yuan. This goal was officially announced during the "Seminar on Development Trends of Industrial Clusters in National Economic and Technological Development Zones" held in Han City. The event marked the first public unveiling of the "Wuhan China Car Capital" plan, signaling a major shift in the region's industrial strategy.
Prior to this announcement, Wuhan had already begun redefining the development direction of the Wuhan Development Zone. According to the comprehensive blueprint introduced at the time, the zone aimed to leverage the Dongfeng Motor Group as a core driver, expanding its influence across the entire automotive industry chain. From upstream R&D and design to midstream manufacturing, and finally to downstream sectors such as car consumption, entertainment, and culture, the plan emphasized building a complete industrial ecosystem.
To support this vision, the Wuhan Development Zone planned to establish three key bases: an automotive headquarters, a manufacturing hub, and a service outsourcing center. These initiatives were expected to not only boost local economic growth but also position Wuhan as a leading automotive industry cluster in China.
The initiative reflected a broader effort to transform the area into a major player in the global automotive sector, attracting investment, talent, and innovation. With strong government backing and strategic partnerships, the plan aimed to create a sustainable and competitive environment for automotive businesses. As the project moved forward, it was anticipated that the region would become a model for industrial development and technological advancement in China’s growing auto industry.
