Panasonic plans to spend 200 million US dollars to expand lithium-ion battery business

According to Reuters, Matsushita plans to invest 20 billion yen (about 200 million U.S. dollars) in this business to increase the production capacity of small and large lithium-ion batteries, as the lithium-ion battery business turns losses in the previous quarter. .

Matsushita has suffered serious losses in recent years, and the total amount of losses in the past two years has reached 15 billion U.S. dollars. Panasonic plans to invest 83 billion yen (about 840 million U.S. dollars) in its Automotive and Industrial Systems Department, which has become the key to Matsushita’s strategy of turning losses.

According to sources, Matsushita will invest US$200 million in its lithium-ion battery business from this fiscal year (April 2013 to March 2014). The purpose of these funds is as follows. First, Matsushita will add a new plant to its Osaka area. A small lithium battery production line and restart of one of the other Osaka factories; in addition, Panasonic will build a new production line at its Kasai plant for the production of large-scale lithium-ion batteries. Sources said that the above expansion project is expected to begin construction next spring.

Relatively speaking, Panasonic faced a more severe situation in the small lithium battery market, the demand for small lithium batteries used in notebook computers plummeted, and the strength of competitors from Asia also continued to increase. Sony previously announced that it may sell its lithium-ion battery business for computers, laptops and mobile phones in the future.

In the second quarter of this year, China’s Panasonic’s small lithium battery business performed well, operating profit reached 4.1 billion yen (approximately US$41 million), and operating profit margin reached 5.8%, while the sector was still in a loss-making state during the same period last year, with a high level of losses. 2 billion yen (about 20 million U.S. dollars).

Panasonic is currently working to boost its loss-making plan by expanding its automotive-related business. In addition to lithium batteries, the company's products in this industry also include navigation systems, sensors, and audio equipment.
