Maltodextrin, a polysaccharide made by partial hydrolysis of starch, is separated from natural sugars and used as a fuel. When combined with air, electrons are released from the battery in the sugar solution to generate electrical energy. Sugar is cheap and abundant, so it makes a battery which is not only affordable but also biodegradable.
