The Dongfeng Cummins Engine Technology R&D Center, a joint venture between Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. and Cummins Inc. of the United States, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone of Hubei Province. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first R&D center established by a foreign engine manufacturer in China. The facility represents a major step forward in the two-decade-long partnership between Cummins and Dongfeng, signaling a shift from mere production to advanced research and development.
The collaboration between Cummins and Dongfeng began back in 1985 when Dongfeng introduced the Cummins B-series diesel engines through licensing. By 1996, the two companies deepened their cooperation by establishing Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture focused on the C-series engines. In 2003, they further integrated their operations, incorporating the B-series into the joint venture. As a result, Dongfeng Cummins became the largest and most technologically advanced joint venture in China’s medium and heavy-duty diesel engine industry.
Since then, Dongfeng’s medium and heavy trucks have been powered by the B and C series engines from Dongfeng Cummins. In 2004, models like the EQ1290, EQ1230, and EQ4165 were equipped with the C-series engines, further strengthening the brand’s market presence.
Zhu Fushou, General Manager of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., emphasized that the 20-year strategic partnership between the two companies reflects a strong alliance and a shared commitment to mutual growth. Even during a challenging market period in the first half of 2005, Dongfeng’s medium and heavy trucks maintained the top sales position, with Cummins engines accounting for 70% to 80% of the installed base.
Today, Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. is the second-largest production base for Cummins globally, with an annual capacity of 150,000 medium and heavy-duty diesel engines. Its output represents 20% of Cummins’ total global production.
With diesel engines offering better fuel efficiency—about 30% more efficient than gasoline engines—and being more environmentally friendly, they hold a significant share in European and American markets, reaching up to 50% in some countries. However, in China, the market share of diesel engines remains below 10%. The establishment of the new R&D center aims to tap into this growing potential and support the long-term development of diesel technology in China.
The new Dongfeng Cummins Engine Technology R&D Center will leverage Cummins’ global R&D network across seven countries, sharing advanced resources and product platforms to accelerate innovation. It will develop engine technologies and products in line with European and American standards, ensuring competitiveness on a global scale.
Sun Xiaobo, General Manager of the R&D Center, stated that the initial phase of work will focus on developing Euro IV emission-compliant engines tailored for Chinese customers. Over time, the center will expand into areas such as construction machinery, mining equipment, marine engines, power generation systems, rail transport, and critical components, aiming to achieve comprehensive R&D from individual parts to complete vehicle power systems.
