Seiko Instruments has developed an ultra-small motor with a diameter of only 0.95mm

Seiko Instruments (SII, Headquarters: Chiba City) and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Gucheon Research Laboratory jointly developed a small motor with a diameter of only 0.95mm. The development was based on the invention of the Honorary Professor of the Capital University of Tokyo, Shouya Masaru, and the head of the Department of Technical Management Research at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Professor Gu Chuanyong. At the time of development, Seiko Instruments applied processing techniques accumulated during the development and production of watches.



The original small motor, such as an electromagnetic motor, is difficult to reduce the diameter to less than 1 mm due to the limitation of the size of the coil and the magnet. In addition, the ultrasonic motor needs to work hard on the arrangement of the piezoelectric element and the supercharging mechanism, and there is also a problem that the miniaturization space is limited.



The newly developed motor can be classified as a type of ultrasonic motor. Specifically, an ultrasonic oscillation source is provided outside the motor. A wire having a diameter of 50 μm is used as a waveguide, and the columnar rotor that contacts the stator is rotated by propagating ultrasonic waves to the coil stator of the tip end. Compared with the original motor, it is not only simple in construction, but also has a small number of components, and can be easily miniaturized. In addition, instead of transmitting an electrical signal to the motor, the vibration is transmitted directly to the motor for rotation, and this configuration also enables rotation in the liquid. In terms of the wire as the guide wave of the watch, the Seiko instrument uses the Spron material developed for the mechanical watch clockwork.



The product developed this time does not include the rotor shaft with a length of 3.6 mm and a rotational speed of 2000 to 4000 rpm. The torque is below 0.2 μN·m. In the future, we will further improve the characteristics of our motors and strive to be used in various fields.
