While the conference did touch on some important issues, many of the pressing questions left unresolved from last year’s COP26 remained unaddressed. Notably, there were no substantial commitments to reduce global reliance on fossil fuels or lower global temperatures. Scientists have consistently warned that to avoid irreversible climate damage, the average global temperature rise over the next decade must remain below 1.5°C. Achieving this goal requires a 44% reduction in global emissions within the next ten years. However, pre-conference documents suggested that current plans aim for only a 1% reduction—far short of what’s necessary. This raises an important question: What are individuals and nations doing to genuinely contribute to emission reductions? In light of these concerns, we conducted a survey to explore what actions the UK public is taking to address climate change. Surprisingly, 55% of UK households reported actively working to decrease their carbon footprint through measures like recycling and transitioning to renewable energy sources, including solar panels. Among all cities surveyed, Birmingham stood out, with 73% of its residents indicating they are making efforts to reduce emissions. Despite these positive signs, the data suggests that Britons remain skeptical about whether they’re doing enough collectively to enhance environmental sustainability. Only 7.5% of respondents felt that no further societal changes were needed to improve our ecological footprint. Air quality remains a significant concern globally. According to WHO guidelines, only three regions worldwide meet the standards for clean air. In 2021, UK air quality exceeded safe limits by 1.8 times, partly due to the staggering 15 billion trees lost annually to deforestation. On a brighter note, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to gain momentum. In 2021, 6.6 million EVs were sold globally, with projections indicating even greater growth by the end of 2022. Since EVs emit significantly fewer pollutants compared to traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles, their increasing prevalence could lead to a measurable decrease in global emissions.
