In a neighborhood still recovering from heavy storm damage and without power two nights after a severe storm system swept through Mt. Prospect, including a tornado, a house fire was reported around 9 PM. Residents noticed smoke coming from a ranch-style home at 601 N. Elmhurst Avenue — located four streets west of Elmhurst Road/Route 83, at the corner of West Highland Street.
A photo shows firefighters completing roof ventilation while others inspect the living room after the fire was brought under control. The image was captured by Larry Shapiro.
Another image highlights Mt. Prospect Tower 13, a Pierce Velocity, positioned in front of the house on Highland Street, providing essential lighting for firefighters working on the roof.
A third photo displays Mt. Prospect Engine 13, which had set up nearby on Elmhurst Avenue with two lengths of LDH to a hydrant across the street.
A fourth image reveals a potentially problematic hydrant on the next block, which could have made securing water supply difficult for emergency crews.
Initial reports indicated that a dog was inside the house, though no residents were present. Engine 14 arrived just before Tower 13 and found fire coming out of the east windows. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4, prompting mutual aid from Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, and Des Plaines, along with additional personnel from Mt. Prospect stations.
An off-duty crew brought the Mt. Prospect Squad to the scene to refill air bottles for the firefighters.
Another photo captures the intense flames bursting from the east side of the house as units arrived on the scene.
The fire was quickly brought under control within 15 minutes, and out-of-town units were released shortly after. Throughout the neighborhood, tree limbs and other debris from the storm were scattered along both sides of the streets.
A final image shows the widespread storm damage overhead, visible throughout the area.
Another shot reveals the extent of the storm's impact, with debris lining the streets. A large tree is seen lying across a hydrant near the fire scene, reminding crews to be cautious of blocked or obstructed water sources.
This combination of weather-related challenges and a sudden fire added to the complexity of the response, showcasing the dedication and quick action of local emergency services.
