Yuchai Group Releases 2008 Sustainability Report in Beijing
GKN Driveline is moving forward with its plan to establish a new driveshaft manufacturing facility in Wuhan. By the end of this year, the plant will begin supplying driveshafts to Dongfeng Motor and its joint ventures with Honda and Citroen. This marks a significant step in GKN's long-term strategy to strengthen its presence in the Chinese automotive market.
The new factory will span 144,000 square feet (approximately 15,700 square meters) and will be operated by Shanghai Natieus Drive Shaft (SDS). Once fully operational, it is expected to create over 600 jobs and produce more than one million driveshafts annually. This expansion underscores GKN’s confidence in the growth potential of China’s automotive industry.
Mr. Wang Haixiang, Director of China Business Development at GKN Group, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to China. He stated, “In today’s challenging global economic climate, particularly for the automotive sector, our dedication to the Chinese market remains unwavering.†With 250 years of engineering excellence, GKN is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year and hopes to continue expanding its operations in China while deepening relationships with customers across the Asia-Pacific region.
The Wuhan plant will be managed by one of the oldest Sino-foreign joint ventures in the auto parts industry. GKN has maintained a partnership with SAIC for 21 years, jointly producing transmission shafts for the domestic market. The joint venture agreement between the two companies will be renewed for another 50 years, with the official renewal ceremony taking place in London on April 24th.
Mr. Wang added, “GKN was the first European auto parts supplier to invest in China and has since become the leading manufacturer of drive system components in the country.†In addition to its ongoing efforts in innovation, GKN continues to introduce advanced technologies that reduce the weight of driveshaft components, improving fuel efficiency and overall vehicle performance.
Shanghai Natieus Drive Shaft operates five factories across China, including facilities in Wuhan, Chongqing, Kangqiao, Shenjiang, and Zhoupu. The company has invested over $100 million (around one billion yuan) in China to expand its production capacity, manufacturing more than 600,000 cross universal joints, 5 million side shafts, and 1.5 million universal joints each year.
Its main partner in China, SAIC, is one of the country’s top three automotive manufacturers, with annual sales exceeding 1.1 million passenger cars and 500,000 commercial vehicles. In 2007, SAIC was ranked among the Fortune Global 500 companies, placing at number 402.
