Palon beats Europe's top heavy trucks with European standard crash safety

Volkswagen announced on September 15 that its Brazilian subsidiary will invest R$1 billion (approximately $557 million) over the next four years to double the production capacity of heavy trucks and buses in Brazil. The announcement was made by Roberto Cortes, President of Volkswagen Brazil, during the opening of a new logistics center in Resende. He attributed the expansion to the strong growth of the Brazilian economy. Alongside the new facility, the company plans to introduce a third shift, creating 1,300 new jobs. Production capacity will increase from around 200 units per day to 300. Cortes also mentioned that two-thirds of the investment will be directed toward the development of new products. Stephan Schaller, President of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Worldwide, attended the event and revealed that by 2018, the global production of commercial vehicles is expected to reach 800,000 units. For this year, Volkswagen aims to produce 500,000 commercial vehicles. In the first eight months of 2008, the Brazilian heavy truck market saw a 29.4% year-on-year increase in sales, while passenger car sales rose by 17.1%. Truck output in Brazil increased by 26.7% to 111,300 units, and passenger car production climbed by 17.6% to 31,700 units. Volkswagen's commercial vehicle sales in Brazil, including imports, grew by 36.8% during the same period, making it the second-largest brand in the segment after Mercedes-Benz. This significant growth highlights the company’s strong position in the Brazilian market and its commitment to further expansion.
