The reporter learned from Shanghai Gas Pipeline Network Co., Ltd. on April 25 that over the past six years since the construction of the West-East Gas Pipeline, it has provided more than 11.3 billion cubic meters of gas to Shanghai, equivalent to reducing the emission of 680,000 tons of harmful substances and reducing the carbon dioxide acid gas. Emissions of 37,200,000 tons, air quality in Shanghai has been excellent for six consecutive years.
Since the West-East Gas Pipeline supplied gas to Shanghai, the annual gas supply volume has soared from 500 million cubic meters in 2004 to 2.3 billion cubic meters in 2009 and reached 2.52 billion cubic meters in 2008, accounting for the total supply of natural gas in the city. 85% of the volume, natural gas in Shanghai, the proportion of primary energy consumption reached 5%. Nearly 2.1 million gas users in the city basically realize the conversion to natural gas users, and urban gas basically achieves “full coverage†of natural gas. Hu Guoliang, an engineer of the Shanghai Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, told reporters that in the past, air pollution complaints caused by burning coal accounted for 1/3 of all environmental complaints. After switching to natural gas, residents have become less and less complaints about this. According to the latest monitoring data from the environmental protection department in Shanghai, last year, the air quality in Shanghai was 334 days, and the excellent and good rate was 91.5%.
“West Gas†entered Shanghai, optimized the energy structure of Shanghai, and continuously expanded the application of natural gas. From the traditional city gas, it gradually expanded to gas-fired power plants, chemical industry, gas-fired air-conditioning and distributed function systems, CNG vehicles, etc. A fundamental change has taken place that will drive the development of related industries. The Shanghai Chemical Industry Park is one of the largest industrial park projects in China during the “Tenth Five-year Plan†period. After connecting the natural gas from the West to the East in 2004, the development of the chemical industry area received important energy protection. In 2009, the total energy consumption in this industrial area decreased by 6% year-on-year. The production and sales volume of Baosteel Group's special steel plant, which ranks No. 1 in the domestic special steel industry, is gradually approaching zero after the first household used “West Gasâ€.
It is reported that in 2010 Shanghai plans to use 4.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The West-East Gas Pipeline contract provides 2.373 billion cubic meters of gas, which occupies “half of the countryâ€.
