The long-awaited plan to demolish and rebuild Fire Station 23 in Wheeling officially began on Monday (Feb. 3), as village trustees gave their approval for site plans and a special use permit. This marks a major step forward for the village’s fire department, which has been operating out of an aging facility that no longer meets modern needs.
The current station, located at 780 Wheeling Road, is 42 years old and has become increasingly outdated. It was originally designed to house just one fire truck, but today the department requires more space and updated infrastructure to serve up to 75,000 residents across a 10-square-mile area. Deputy Fire Chief Michael McGreal explained that the cost of renovating the existing structure would be too high, so a full reconstruction was deemed the most practical solution.
The new Station 23 will span 11,203 square feet and be constructed using durable materials such as cement, stone veneer, and fiber cement panels in various shades of gray, white, brown, and red. The building will be situated on the north end of the village-owned property near Echo Lake, just north of Hintz Road. The design includes a seamless roof, a front canopy entry, a parking lot on the south side, and landscaped areas facing the street.
To make this project possible, the village board approved a special use permit allowing the construction of a fire station in the I-1 zoning district—a rare move, as most fire stations are typically located in business zones. When the original station was built in the 1970s, such a permit wasn’t required. In addition, the board granted exceptions for the property's setback and height limits, reducing the setback from 35 to 30 feet and increasing the height limit from 30 to 33 feet.
Once the new Station 23 is completed, the fire department plans to replicate the same design for the upcoming renovation of Station 42 on Dundee Road, ensuring consistency and improved functionality across the village’s emergency services.
