The Village of Wheeling has taken a major step forward in its plan to replace Fire Station 23, which is set to be demolished and rebuilt. The project officially began on Monday, February 3, when village trustees approved the site plans and a special use permit for the development.

The current station, located at 780 Wheeling Road, was built 42 years ago and has since become outdated. It was originally designed to accommodate just one fire engine, but today’s needs require more space and modern facilities. With over 75,000 residents relying on the fire department within a 10-square-mile area, officials say the aging structure is no longer sufficient.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael McGreal explained that while renovation was an option, the cost estimates were too high. As a result, the decision was made to completely rebuild the station to ensure it meets current and future demands.

The new Fire Station 23 will cover 11,203 square feet and be constructed using cement, stone veneer, and fiber-cement panels in a range of colors including gray, white, brown, and red. It will be situated on the north end of the village-owned property near Echo Lake, just north of Hintz Road. The design includes a seam roof, a front canopy entry, a south-side parking lot, and landscaping along the street.

To facilitate the construction, the village approved a special use permit, allowing the station to be built in the I-1 zoning district. Most fire stations are typically located in business zones, and the original building in the 1970s didn’t require such a permit. Additionally, the board granted exceptions for setbacks and building height, reducing the required setback from 35 to 30 feet and increasing the maximum height from 30 to 33 feet.

Once completed, the new station will serve as a model for future upgrades, including the planned renovation of Fire Station 42 on Dundee Road. This move reflects the village’s commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient emergency response system for its residents.
