The price of glyphosate has surged this year due to strong demand and rising production costs. Currently, the price stands at approximately 60,000 yuan per ton, more than double the 28,000 yuan per ton recorded last year. In addition to increased demand, the rise in crude oil prices has also contributed significantly to the price hike. This combination of factors has led to a significant increase in the cost of producing and purchasing glyphosate.
Global demand for glyphosate is growing rapidly, and high prices have prompted several major Chinese chemical companies, including Zhejiang Xin'an Chemical Industry Group, Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemicals, and Anhui Huaxing Chemical, to accelerate their capital increases and expand production capacity. This development has drawn considerable industry attention. On December 3, two major Sichuan-based fertilizer companies, Chuanhua Co., Ltd. and Lutianhua Group, announced plans to jointly invest 110 million yuan to establish Shengpu Chemical Co., Ltd., which will produce raw materials for glyphosate, specifically iminodiacetonitrile.
Glyphosate is primarily used for weed control in transgenic glyphosate-tolerant crops, non-cultivated areas, and no-till farming systems. It remains the most widely used herbicide globally, with no effective alternative currently available. The surge in demand this year has been driven by the expansion of genetically modified corn and soybean cultivation in the U.S. and South America.
Experts estimate that global glyphosate demand reached around 500,000 tons this year. Looking ahead, as planted areas continue to grow and demand rises in Southeast Asia and China, the market could reach 1 million tons in the coming years. From 1996 to 2006, the global area under genetically modified crops expanded to 577 million hectares—a 60-fold increase.
In addition to the growth in GM crop cultivation, the rapid development of biofuels is also boosting glyphosate demand. Countries like the U.S. and Brazil are expanding biofuel feedstock planting to reduce reliance on expensive petroleum. The increased planting of genetically modified energy crops for ethanol and biodiesel production has further stimulated the use of glyphosate.
Internationally, glyphosate is produced using oil and natural gas as raw materials, so rising crude oil prices directly impact its cost. In China, the main production route involves glycine and dimethyl phosphite, with most products exported. As international prices rise, domestic prices have also increased accordingly.
According to recent data, companies such as Xin'an, Jiangshan, and Huaxing Chemicals have seen strong performance in the first three quarters of this year, with average net profit increases of around 60%. To meet rising demand, all three companies are expanding their production capacities. Jiangshan plans to increase output from 20,000 to 42,000 tons, Xin'an from 55,000 to 75,000 tons, and Huaxing is expected to reach 15,000 tons. Other companies, including Sanonda and Yangnong Chemical, are also building new glyphosate production lines.
Industry insiders believe that with continued high crude oil prices and limited short-term supply improvements, the profitability of domestic glyphosate manufacturers remains strong. This will likely drive further investment in production capacity. However, challenges such as the shortage of glycine, the key raw material, and the slow release of new production capacity may keep prices elevated in the long term.
