Crews from over 30 fire departments across the suburbs joined forces as part of the Lights and Ladders Brigade, with Project Fire Buddies playing a key role in transforming the Lockport home of Vinnie Gincauskas, a 15-year-old boy currently fighting a rare form of cancer. Volunteers arrived early on Wednesday morning, brought holiday cheer, and got to work decorating the house with lights, ornaments, and festive touches.
Vinnie was diagnosed with DSRCT (desmoplastic small round cell tumor) back in March. This rare type of soft tissue sarcoma typically affects young people and requires aggressive treatment. He recently underwent surgery to remove nearly 100 tumors from his abdomen, following an earlier operation that removed more tumors and a lymph node from his chest. Despite the challenges, Vinnie has remained strong and positive throughout his journey.
Project Fire Buddies, a nonprofit organization started in Oak Forest in 2016, has grown significantly over the years. The group brings together local firefighters and volunteers to support children battling serious illnesses. Their efforts have expanded to include 30 different departments across the south suburbs, including areas like Oak Lawn, Palos, Orland Park, Tinley Park, and many others.
For Vinnie, the gesture meant a lot. “Thank you so much for doing this for me and my family,†he said, expressing deep gratitude to the volunteers. His family was overwhelmed by the kindness and support shown during the visit.
This particular decoration was the second stop on a five-home route for the brigade on Wednesday. In total, the team decorated 13 homes this year, with fire departments from across the region participating. Some of the departments involved included Oak Lawn, Chicago, Posen, Flossmor, Country Club Hills, Lockport, Orland Park, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Tinley Park, Aurora, Chicago Heights, Cicero, Manhattan, New Lenox, Frankfort, and McHenry Township.
Project Fire Buddies partnered with the Lights and Ladders Brigade, which is under the umbrella of the Finley Forever Foundation. This initiative combines efforts from several organizations, including the Tom Hopkins Foundation and Christmas without Cancer, to bring joy and support to families facing cancer during the holidays. All decorations are donated, and each family gets to keep the items they receive.
The event was entirely funded through donations collected throughout the year, and this year, organizers spent nearly $15,000 on decorations—each one carefully chosen to bring warmth and hope to those in need.
