The automobile industry in Wuhan is accelerating rapidly, but the availability of high-quality local molds remains limited. According to a recent report, the city plans to invest 1 billion yuan to establish the "Wuhan Mould Industrial Park" in the Hannan Development Zone, marking the largest mold production initiative in Central China. This project aims to strengthen the synergy between the local mold and automotive industries.
Scheduled for construction starting in January next year, the park is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2009. At its initial stage, the project is projected to generate an annual industrial output of at least 3 billion yuan. The park will focus on attracting 200 mold manufacturing companies from advanced regions such as Shandong, Guangdong, and Jiangsu—key areas known for their strong manufacturing sectors. Currently, three companies have already expressed interest and are expected to move into the park by the end of 2009.
Industry experts highlight that the mold industry is often referred to as the "mother of industry," with a return-on-investment ratio of 1:10. Over the past decade, China's mold industry has grown at an annual rate of 15%, reaching a total output value of 65 billion yuan last year. Provinces like Shandong, Guangdong, and Jiangsu dominate this sector, accounting for 80% of the national output. However, Wuhan still lags behind, with only 2% of the country’s mold production volume.
A representative from the Hannan Development Zone noted that the lack of supporting mold suppliers has hindered the growth of the local auto industry. For instance, during a recent bidding process for molds by Dongfeng Motor Company, all the winning bids came from foreign firms, while local companies failed to meet the required standards.
To address this gap, the initial phase of the park will focus on supporting Wuhan’s automotive supply chain by introducing advanced mold manufacturers from developed regions. In the next three to four years, the park aims to expand its reach nationwide, providing high-quality molds for various industrial projects. Once operational, the project is expected to create over 15,000 jobs.
According to officials from the Wuhan Development and Reform Commission, the demand for high-tech molds is growing rapidly as the city accelerates its development in key industries like automobiles. Building a mold production base with appropriate scale, advanced technology, and efficient operations has become a critical task for advancing Wuhan’s modern industrial development.
