The transmission mode of the traditional rotary servo motor + ball screw feed system can not meet the requirements of high speed machining. In recent years, a new type of linear motor servo drive feed mode has emerged, which eliminates the intermediate drive link from the motor to the table, and is called a zero drive. Since the German company used linear motors for machining centers for the first time in 1993, this new type of high-speed feed unit has attracted worldwide attention. The high-speed machining center driven by linear motor has become the basic development direction of CNC machine tools in the 21st century. How to calculate the linear motor parameters according to the design requirements and select the model of the linear motor. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of various layout forms of the feed unit are discussed. Combined with the design and manufacturing practice of the feed unit of our school, the design method of the structure layout of the high-speed feed unit is introduced. The paper also discusses some of the main issues that should be considered in the design of linear motor feed system, such as the anti-magnetic and heat-dissipation of linear motors, the design of the worktable and guide rails, etc., and the requirements for the servo control system of the feed unit. Research and practice show that linear motors have good application prospects on high-speed CNC machine tools, and linear motor drives are expected to become the basic transmission mode for 21st century speed CNC machine tools.
