Actively promote the application of biodegradable plastics at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and practice the concept of the Green Olympics. Yang Yichun, Director of the Office of the Science and Technology Committee of the 29th Olympic Games and Head of the Technical Department of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, introduced that the Beijing Olympic Committee and the UNI- In the joint communique on the application of degradable plastics in the Beijing Olympic Games, both parties decided to cooperate in the selection, recycling and public education of biodegradable plastic products. Up to now, these cooperations have made positive progress: proposals for the principles and procedures for the screening of green plastics for the Beijing Olympic Games have been issued; the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games standards for the application of biodegradable plastics have been formulated; and the Olympic Committee proposed to host Olympic Games in the Olympic Village during the next Olympic Games. The proposal for the use of biodegradable plastics in major venues has received positive responses from the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee.
The Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee Vice Minister of Olympics Wang Shuxian and Director of Catering Division of the Games Service Department Yi Yi introduced that the relevant authorities are actively coordinating the Olympic Village to purchase biodegradable plastic products such as biodegradable garbage bags and laundry bags during the Olympic Games. Biodegradable plastic tableware will be used selectively in centralized dining places; biodegradable plastic tableware will be used in all places where disposable tableware is used.
According to Weng Yunxuan, secretary general of the Degradable Plastics Professional Committee of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, biodegradable plastics have transitioned from the R&D period in the 1990s to the current stage of application promotion and rapid development. In the past two years, China's biodegradable plastics have made great progress. Not only has the scale of raw material production expanded rapidly, but also the product processing technology has achieved breakthroughs. At the same time, it also established product standards and evaluation systems that are in line with international standards. All this laid a good foundation for the application of biodegradable plastics in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Science and Technology Committee of the 29th Olympic Games and the International High Technology Center of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (ICS-UNIDO), jointly organized by Beijing New Material Development Center and Tsinghua University. The 2007 Green Materials Green Olympics International Exhibition was held in the same period.
